I just started using Slack 12 and I'm having a problem with my camera.
When I plug the camera in, the window opens and sez:

"unable to create io-slave"
unknown protocol "camera"

I couldn't find anything that refers to this in the Slack Book.

I made a camera group an added myself to it with no results..

First, you have to find the correct driver for you camera.
So you have to run "/sbin/lsusb" to see how your machine recognises the webcam and then do a bit of googling to find the relevant driver. Then just compile and install the driver. Then load the driver issuing "modprobe driver-name". Post here if you have any issues.

slackass, is it a webcam or a digital camera?

If its a digital camera (I think I had a similar error) check out the HAL readme. Or you can mount it manually as root

mount sdaX /mnt/tmp

If its a webcam the above advice should work.

It's a digital camera. But, I've messed around with it so much that it's hard telling what I've screwed up "fixing" stuff. I'm going to do a re-install and go back through the slack book and take my time and try and learn something. Debian is what I run all the time so theres no big panic to get Slack working. I just started fooling around with Slack to try to learn a little here and there. I can't make everything work, but: I'm loving every minute of it. Slack seems to be blowing the cob webs out of my tired old brain.

All of the cameras I've used I've been able to mount like I would mount a thumb drive manually so it could be the HAL problem.
