Slackware 12.2 (fresh install) KDE will not start up

Hello,

I mad a fresh installation of slackware 12.2 some time ago, so far everything works fine, but unfortunately KDE doesnīt start up if i try as mortal user. If i start KDE as root everything is fine.

The problem is that i donīt get any errormessage(s) or else. I hangs while starting up "KDE system deamons"

Xorg0.log has no hints either.

Any ideas what could be wrong.

BTW only KDE doesnīt work for mortal users, fluxbox, blackbox etc... works fine.

Thanks,
tiuz

Hello,

Could you post the groups to which your user belongs to? Use the following command:

Code:
cat /etc/group | grep `username`
Change `username` to the actual login of your mortal user.

I would suggest to add the user to group plugdev if he/she doesn't yet belong to it. Use the following command:

Code:
gpasswd -a `username` plugdev

Hello,

cat /etc/group | grep borsti

prints out following : plugdev:x:83:root,borsti

So mortal user borsti is already member of group plugdev

There is neither kdm.log nor .xsession-errors.

I have created a new user just for testing, and still have the same problem with this new user too.

Hello,

If your system hangs at KDE system daemons, it could be a permission error for your user. So just in case, you can add the user to these 3 groups: audio, cdrom, video in addition to plugdev.

I'm not sure if it will solve your issue but that's the default additional groups in 12.2 when you use script "adduser" to create a new user. When using "adduser", there is a step whhen you are requested to enter additional groups: Just press the UP arrow to display the default additional groups.

Might help to ensure all files are owned by the account:

chown -R borsti:borsti /home/borsti

All files in the userdir belongs to that user, and adding the user to the audio, video and cdrom as well as plugdev groups didnīt help either.

Maybe something went wrong during installation as other stuff (samba, nfsd, bind) doesnīt work as expected too. Iīll try and install 13.0

Thanks,
tiuz
