Marvellous

Many thanks to Pat and all his colleagues for what I'm sure will be another excellent version of Slackware, if the capabilities of RC2 are anything to go by!

Slack on!

*Basking in the glow of Slackware 12* Thanks Pat V.

WOW,I can't beleive Slackware 12 is out. I thought it was going to go to RC3 cause the next stable kernel was just around the corner.

Great work to Pat and all the Slackware dev team.

Hooray! Lots of good stuff in here. Too bad they went with xorg 7.2 rather than 7.3. Does anyone know why they chose that version?

H_TeXMeX_H 07-02-2007 07:51 PM

I'm betting that, as usual, stability is more important than bleeding edge ... if you don't believe this, do try a bleeding edge distro ...

willysr 07-02-2007 07:57 PM

i think if 2.6.22 would have come out, i don't think it will be included as the default kernel (probably on /extra or /testing) as it would need more testing before it's proven to be stable enough for official release like 12.0

7.3 doesn't come out til August.. 7.2 is the latest version release. However, looks like 12.0 does include xorg-server-1.3.0 which isn't a part of X11R7.2 and is destined for X11R7.3. So... In a sense, it does have 7.3...

Actually Tex, Slackware 12.0 is pretty bleeding edge... ;) More so than it's ever been in the history of Slackware releases. Atleast we have a tickless kernel as default. Nice for us laptop users. I'm hoping that's enabled by default anyway.

ZOIKS!!!!! Must download now!!!

spiffytech 07-02-2007 08:25 PM

Ah, so it has xorg-xserver 1.3. I've seen reverences to xorg 1.3 and 7.3. I figured that 1.3 was a typo. Cool! As long as I get in on some of that hotplugging action.

Edited:
ftp://slackware.osuosl.org/pub/slack...kware-12.0-iso
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...ware-12.0-iso/

both those links only contain the md5 sums and the asc files (for GPG keys) neither of them contain any actual ISO's.
and the readme1st says "If you're reading this on ftp.slackware.com, you will find that the
ISO images are not here. This is because we simply don't have the
bandwidth at ftp.slackware.com to provide ISO images.
ISO downloads take a long time, and block people from retrieving
small updates.

If you're looking to download the ISO, consider using BitTorrent.
If there are active torrents available, information may be found on
on http://slackware.com. BitTorrent is available as a package for
Slackware in the /extra directory.

Mirror sites may also have the ISO images up for FTP.

Use the .asc files here to verify your ISO images are authentic."

I had contacted Pat about the Emacs issue a while ago and the response was that the fate of Emacs is open. The size of Emacs package has doubled in this update so it doesn't fit into Slack CD's so Pat is thinking what to do about it. If you add new Emacs what you would drop then?

Just when I started using Emacs :(

H_TeXMeX_H 07-02-2007 09:28 PM

emacs is getting really bloated ... maybe just stick with archaic releases ... or move on to something else.

Well, Emacs 22 has a true multi-lingual environment -- that's probably where the extra bulk comes from.

Maybe (hopefully) Emacs 22 could be offered online in the /extra folder like Firefox 2.0 was.

Otherwise I wish somebody would post a good Slackbuild script for Emacs 22 that works with Slackware 11 and/or 12.

Regards,

-Drew

If the multi-lingual composes much of the bloat ... why not separate it ? Like an i18n package ... like it currently is for k3b and kde.

Nice. Downloading now, will seed for the rest of the night. Thanks Pat, for all the hard work! This looks to be a really strong release. Long live Slack.
