Slackware 11 ISO File Installation
Hi!
I have been searching some tutorials on how to install slackware from isos. But there has been little help so i tinkered on my own.
This is my first time to install slackware distro on my pc. Since then, i've been using Fedora and SuSE.. and of course Windoze.. =P
I installed my Slackware 11 without burning any cds.. Yep! That's right! After almost 6 hourse of searching, configuring, editing, etc. I finally installed Slackware 11 without using CDs.
Okay, okay, Here goes:
First of all, Let us assume that:
1.) Your main OS is Windows and you want to try Slackware.
2.) You already have the iso files.
3.) You have a temporary folder in your C: (let's call it "C:\FolderName")
4.) You already have 3 new floppy discs.
5.) Your hard drive is IDE. (haven't tried this on SATA/RAID but i think it should work by using scsi2/3.i or raid.i as your boot disk)
6.) You already have a partition ready for the new OS.
Step 1:
Extrac/Copy the "slackware" folder from all of the iso cds (you can use WinRAR) to your "C:\FolderName" (Don't worry about files being overwritten. After this, you will have "C:\FolderName\slackware" where all the packages are inside this folder)
Step 2:
Browse the 2nd install disc and use rawrite.exe to make boot floppy (bare.i) which is in "bootdisks" folder in 2nd install cd.
Also use rawrite.exe to make 2 root floppies (install.1 and install.2) from "rootdisks" folder in 2nd install cd.
Remember to name them as: "Boot Disk", "Root Disk 1" and "Root Disk 2"
Step 3:
After making these 3 floppies, reboot pc and load from the "Boot Disk". Press "Enter" to continue booting ...
Insert the "Root Disk 1" and press "Enter" ...
Insert the "Root Disk 2" and press "Enter" ...
Step 4:
After all of that booting, you will be then asked to configure your keyboard, just press "Enter". Then login as "root"..
Step 5:
In root console, you can prepare your partition using "cfdisk". Just type "cfdisk" on the prompt. You will then see your HD partitions. Please take note of the partition where you put the "C:\FolderName\slackware" files. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN USING "CFDISK". ALL YOUR DATA MIGHT BE LOST!
After configuring your partitions (remember to add a swap partition), select "quit"
Step 6:
Type "setup" to bring you to the Slackware Installation. You can skip the first 2 options and proceed to "Add Swap Partition"
Step 7:
Continue through the setup until you are in the "Select Source Media".
Select "Install from a disk partition". and "Ok".
enter "/dev/hdax" (where x is your "C:\FolderName\slackware" partition)
Press "Ok."
Step 8:
Type in "FolderName\slackware" and press "Ok". You should begin to select packages to install.
Go through the setup until.....
Step 9:
When selecting the boot image, Insert back your "Boot Disk" and select "floppy: Use boot image from floppy."
You can now configure your LILO and some other things.
Reboot.
Installation successful.
You can optionally delete the "C:\FolderName\slackware" folder.
Hope this could help! Thanks!
