Did the release of 11 catch the gnome community unawares?
I've been trying to find a gnome install that will work with 11. All I can find is installs for 10.2 at the most. The hype that preceded the release of 11, IMHO, should have given a red flag to the gnome community that it was time to start getting gnome ready for the 'new' release. (I say 'new', because -current was very, very close to the actual 11 that it could have been used to get the gnome installs close).
All I see in the various gnome/Slackware related websites has to do with 10.2, and no mention of 11, with this exception. But still no 11 compatible version.
Anybody know what happened? Did I miss a version of gnome that does work with 11? Did the gnome community fall asleep and not see the imminent release of 11? Or is gnome just not really workable with 11?
I'm using Freerock GNOME 2.14.3 with 11.0 and it's fine.
2.16 is built against Slack 11 and is available in unstable. http://gsb.freerock.org/download/

Just asking...
We actually had 2.16.0 built before Slackware 11.0 was even released, but we wanted to put it through some heavy testing and fix any small issues before making any serious announcements. Several Slackware users were able to immediately make use of it upon Slack 11.0's release, and have been a lot of help in ironing out the last few bugs. Things are pretty much complete at this point and we will be announcing a more formal release candidate in a few days.
We think that some folks will like the changes we've made with this release. As noted in the above link, we've stopped building X11 with this release... Not only because some folks out have wished for that change, but because I'm sick of maintaining patched updates for X11 security issues (this last year was a real pain).
I have just installed Dropline with Slack-11 and it's perfect as far as I can tell. I especially like the HP Printer tool that lets me use my all-in-one printer to scan, read camera media, etc. in conjunction with the hplip driver provided by HP. At this point, IMHO, HP is the leader in linux printers! Thank God for that.
Anyway, there is a specific download for Dropline and Slack-11. I recommend going that route. Dropline has always been a great window manager.
I was running Gware on 10.2 (only b/c I needed it to get GnuCash working, and for Evolution with Exchange) and loved the simplicity and, as advertised, non-intrusiveness of it. Haven't seen anything on their site about 11 yet, so I haven't tried installing it.
Has anyone else tried Freerock on Slack 11 yet? Is it safe to install?
I've used Freerock on Slackware 10.2, but, not 11.0. I was very happy with Dropline on Slackware 10.2. I like Dropline better than Freerock. I'll wait until Dropline is formally released.

We just announced the pre-release of 2.16.1 on the homepage. We're pretty much done. All that's left is just some of those less important details that I've been wanting to take care of.

Cool. Thanks for the reply, man:-) That sounds good indeed!

And very nice it is too. I installed this a couple of days ago and haven't encountered any quirks yet. Automounting seems to work flawlessly as well.

Only real issue with automounting now appears to be when an optical disk is listed in the fstab. Previous HAL/gnome-mount combinations would fail if this were there. With the new release, it's different. It mounts an optical disk 2 times if it's listed in the fstab (once via the fstab mountpoint and second time in /media/$VOLUMELABEL). The best way to handle this is to just comment the line out in the fstab.
Just figured I'd mention that, in case anyone runs into it.
