It's going to be a wipe the disk this time, but hope Patrick has come up with a better was to upgrade to new versions of slackware. I have 10.1 on my primary box, and it has been running strong since its release!
Anyone know why slack is going from 11 to 12 instead of the usuall pattern of decimals?
A popular guess is because there were some pretty major changes in the coming release. 2.6 default Kernel, HAL, Modular Xorg, Apache 2, GCC 4.1.2, and glibc 2.5 are some of the most notable changes.
I Don't think all 3 are required if you don't want KDE or Gnome.

There is no 'usual pattern' in that there was a 10.2 but no 9.2 and so on. There are massive changes regarding dropping umsdos support and support for 2.4 kernels, upgrading the now exclusively 2.6 kernels, doing significant upgrades to gcc and glibc, going to the modular X, reorganizing old packages such as 'bin' by splitting them into separate packages and doing general package reorganization, adding many packages such as hal/dbus and probably much more I've forgotten. Check the ChangeLog and, if it's been updated, the Changes_and_Hints file (or whatever its exact name is) for details.
Anyway - if ever a Slack release deserved a major bump, this would be a prime candidate. Hell, this time, we could almost skip a couple of numbers again.
Interesting. Slackware 11.1, with kernel 2.4.33.7 as default, 2.6.19.7 as huge and 2.6.20 as testing. But i think Patrick Volkerding doesn't have a large enought team to maintain in parallel two major trees: 11.x and 12.x.
Forgive me for pseudo-hijacking this thread, but my question kind of relates and really does not seem to be worthy of a new one ...
I had -current installed along side 11.0 and XP on my Dell E1505 with ATI X1400 video card. At the time, ATI drivers had not kept pace with xorg and, despite being able to fake the installer into creating the fglrx module, I was unable to make it load. I had searched and found a thread that detailed efforts to get this to work, but I have been unable to locate it again. Long story short, I removed current and waited patiently for progress.
I would like to try again, but if the ATI drivers are still no-go with the xorg in slackware-current, I will stick with 11.0 for now. I need the prop. ATI drivers to get 1440 x 900 (dri is not the deal killer here). The open source radeon driver does not yet support my card - although I would be pleased to be wrong - so that is not an option.
Can someone tell me if the situation remains the same? Also, since I was able to create the module, but unable to load it, it is entirely possible I missed a step in the process. As I have been unable to locate the thread I used before to get 1/2 way there, I don't know if I missed a step or not. A link to "clue" would also be most welcome.
Thanks for any news - good or bad.
Steve
I am running a custom 2.6.21.1 kernel and using ATI proprietory driver 8.37.6 on slack 11 which works just fine.
