slackware 10 sound blaster live problem
 
I am new to Linux, but I love it.

I have looked through the posted messages on sound and have not found anything that I recognized as the solution to this particular problem.

I recently purchased a Sound Blaster Live sound card and installed the hardware, afterwords I could not figure out how to get it working, so I reinstalled slackware 10 with all the included software. I disabled the onboard sound in the bios configuration, I am not too sure I did this correctly. I uncommented the emu10k1 line in the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file per the installation how-to on the slackware website. Then restarted the machine. The driver is being detected on start-up. However the sound card still isn't working.

I looked on the ALSA website and concluded that I had done everything right, but saw the modprobe command, so I tried it. Here are the results:

As you can see the driver is detected, but I don't see the hardware.

I looked in the KDE Info center, and the hardware shows up there, so the hardware is being detected, I tried to copy the text from the KDE Info center, but it didn't work.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA, but nothing changed. I saw that there was a problem with the slackware current where the modules were compiled for the wrong kernel version, I checked that and it appears to be O.K.

I am stumped, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you type:

alsaconf

Does it find the card, but afterwards it does not work? Or does it not find the card
at all? Having an SBLive card myself, on a defualt install, this gets it working - no problem.
But you did mention 'current' - so just asking a followup question.

You are trying to load the oss module, not the alsa module. Every alsa module starts with snd in the name. I think you already loaded alsa through hotplug. That's why a second driver for the same device will fail.

What's the output of lsmod ?

When I run alsaconf it doesn't find the card at all.

The emu10k1 is not among the modules listed in lsmod, so I tried modprobe snd-emu10k1 and got the same results as with modprobe emu10k1???

I have been working on this problem some more, and saw how to list the pci devices. Does this cast any more light on the subject?

Looks like you didn't disable it - Try again to disable, and then try again on setting up the SBLive.

Thanks, I forgot that I was messing with the BIOS setting before I ran lspci. I had it right the first time. I went back and disabled it and still nothing. After reading the error that occurs during the boot process I looked in the syslog file and found the following:

Turns out I have those too - as I'm sitting here listening to music :)

Reseached it - apparently they are harmless - and not all that uncommon.


What kernel are you running?
modified kernel or not?
What ver. of alsa is installed?

mine is:

unmodified

I'm starting to run out of ideas to help.

Yea, Thats where I would take this post.... Right to your kernel. I've seen so many threads on alsa, it makes my head spin. I had this same problem when I first bought my SB Live card. I won't interject too much and you guys keep going but, If I were you, I'd recompile your kernel to just include the very top-most sound option and remove everything else. Then re-install alsa-driver, alsaconf, alsamixer, alsactl store. 99% of the time, it's problem solved. I never had much luck with the sound column in the kernel cluttered like it defaults to.... It's even cleaner if you compile alsa-driver yourself to just include your card.

Also, it looks like you need a new pci.ids file. I hate 'unknowns' in lspci.....

From what I can see you have two problems,

1. Your on-board sound is not disabled
2. You have a 24 bit SBLive! that uses audigyls module instead of emu10k1.

First disable on-boad sound in BIOS and then go to ALSA webby and download latest version (audigyls is not included in earlier releases)

If you are sure that you HAVEN'T got a 24 bit version of SBLive! (look on the board) post back after you've killed the on-board souns and we'll fix it.
My advice though is to take the 24bit back and get a standard Live! instead

Thanks for all the help folks. otchie1 figured it out. I have a SB Live 24 bit sound card. I knew that I had a 24 bit all along, but had no idea that it required a different driver than the old 16 bit SB Live. I did not find anything anywhere else on the internet stating that the SB Live 24 bit is essentially unsuported in Linux until I started searching for the audigyls module.
