well I finished but my re-xf86config won't let me put my moniter into 1280 x 1034 (which I highly prefer to use) but it only gives me everything lower than my default res.

Slackware moved to X.org instead of XFree86 (most distros had done this too) so you have to use xorgconfig instead of xf86config and the configuration file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You're right, gentoo has tons of libraries and automated tools and everything, but if you want quick installs, stick with slackware. Both are great, but gentoo takes a lot of time.

Make a separate "/home" partition during the install wirh cfdisk or fdisk. You can then do
a new installation without losing your information. During the new install tell the installer not to format the hd?? (??=Where " /home" resides). Then use the user manager and the same user name to take back you information after you get your new installation running. This might not help you this time , but it will in the future.
