The iPod does not have an i386 based chip in it. If it did, then maybe Slackware might work.

Google search "iPod Linux" and I bet you will find a site and distro that has ported the linux kernel to the iPod.

It's definately possible. It involves loading a module for you kernel and running a few perl scripts. I can't remember the name of the system to do this, but it was fairly popular when I had my iPod (about a year ago), and it worked like a charm.

Google will lead the way.

How to?

Hi |2ainman,

Were you going to post a How To? Please

I'm using Slackware 10 and everything looks good ipod wise except I can't see my ipod in "/proc/scsi/scsi".

I have the ochi1394, ieee1394 and sbp2 modules all loaded.

My ipod shows up in "cat /proc/bus/ieee1394/devices"

Code:
Node[0-01:1023] GUID[001106000000970f]:
  Vendor ID: `Linux OHCI-1394' [0x004063]
  Capabilities: 0x0083c0
  Bus Options:
    IRMC(1) CMC(1) ISC(1) BMC(0) PMC(0) GEN(0)
    LSPD(2) MAX_REC(2048) CYC_CLK_ACC(0)
  Host Node Status:
    Host Driver : ohci1394
    Nodes connected : 2
    Nodes active : 2
    SelfIDs received: 2
    Irm ID : [0-01:1023]
    BusMgr ID : [0-63:1023]
    In Bus Reset : no
    Root : yes
    Cycle Master : yes
    IRM : yes
    Bus Manager : no
Node[0-00:1023] GUID[000a2700026113c5]:
Vendor ID: `Apple Computer, Inc.' [0x000a27]
  Capabilities: 0x0083c0
  Bus Options:
    IRMC(0) CMC(0) ISC(0) BMC(0) PMC(0) GEN(0)
    LSPD(2) MAX_REC(2048) CYC_CLK_ACC(255)
  Unit Directory 0:
    Vendor/Model ID: Apple Computer, Inc. [000a27] / iPod [000000]
    Software Specifier ID: 00609e
    Software Version: 010483
    Driver: SBP2 Driver
    Length (in quads): 8
But it doesn't seem to get assigned to a scsi device.

Code:
Attached devices:
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: ST320082 Model: 2A Rev: 3.01
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Very annoying I must say. My ipod goes into disk write mode and out of it when I "rmmod sbp2".

So I dunno!

Argh.
