OK from my undertsnading, When doing a A due boot on a Laptop or Desktop. The OS which you want the boot loader to handle is the OS that installed last.
What I have so far. I DL and Check the md5sum on my slack 10 ISo's that AOK.
I have install WinXP first on half of the HD. Now if I understand the install Doc I now process to boot off the DISC. Setup my partition for slackware. I been reading you need a mini of 3 partitions for Slack.
1.) Root
2.) Swap
3.) Home
Once that down Slck should start load/copying the kernal and then I should hit a terminal prompt?
Am I so far so good?
OK here were I getting confussed is it here were I select the packages I want to install. I really hat bloat. What i want to do is to have 2 light wait guis installed. Just in case I mess up one I have the other to fall back to.
1.) main GUI FLux
2.) The X something ot XFCwind I think it was light weight to keep system preformance.
Then It was noted as this point to setup My network config.
Then use stewert I think it is to install the packages I want to have running.
I hope this is making sense. Let me know I am on the right track. Please Reason why I asking for verification. I cuurent have to maintain 95% uptime on my laptop for work since I am on 24/7 call. So i want to get used to linux to replaced my windows usage for security, gaming and uptime. Thanks for the help in advance.
you only need a minimum of two partitions, you can have home in your root partition. How i do a dual boot, is after installing windows. I use the cfdisk (linux partition program) to partition the rest of the disk for linux, but I only make the root linux partition bootable, I remove the bootable flag from windows.
Then I run the Setup command from the cli. and install. after the packages are installed it will setup lilo network root password etc...
install lilo on the root partition, not the MBR. I repeat NOT MBR. lilo should detect windows and linux partition. and tada! your all set.
OK here it is.. I got slackware 10 DL.... However I completely for got I am out of cd 's to burn too. I was woundering since I do have the linux distro of SLAX.Is there a way for me to do the install of Slackware 10 using the slac disk to boot from. Use the HD management from to make mthe partitions. I know I cando that.. But how would I expande or extract the ISO on the HD which is on the windows side of the HD and install. If it not possible I just have to wait until payday tomorrow to get some more cd's... Thanks again.
i think you can mount an iso like you mount /dev/ im not sure tho...
**edit** confirmed, you can mount an iso file with "mount -o loop"
see if you can mount the iso's when you boot up with slac and run the setup scripts from there...
