Slackware 10 can't find my VGA card (long)

Hi all,
Slackware can't find my GeForce 4 440 8x AGP card. I triple boot (between Windows 2000 and Solaris 9) and I am pretty sure I installed their drivers in Windows 2000. (SO I can convice myself that I was not cheated, with some spurious card).

From Slackware Linux, when I tried to use the nv module in Xorg.conf, I can't get X windows. I can't even do Ctrl-Del-BkSpace. So I rebooted and tried the SiS driver. And X works. I get 170 fps in GLXGears.

I use 7S748 Gigabyte mother board.

Q: I wonder if I have (bought and) installed the GeForce 4 440 8X at all, or if somthing I am totally clueless about is going on. Notice SiS 330 (Xabre) VGA card. (There is no built-in VGA port on my motherboard.

If the seller that sold you the video card said that was a nvidia card, tell him to stop smoke crack

Quote:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 330 [Xabre] PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter (rev 01)
I think that is an onboard video card though and if you have a nvidia agp connected, I would
suspect that the agp bus does not work on your motherboard

Or maybe you should disable the onboard card in bios

I say, beleve what Linux says! Your seller lied to you!

In Windows 2000:

1. Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Manage"
2. "+ Computer Management" > "+ System Tools" > "+ Device Manager"
3. Expand "Display Adaptors"
4. Tell us what shows up as the video card.

vonst 01-08-2005 09:46 PM

I have a GeForce card and it's AGP. lspci tells me...

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV31 [GeForce FX 5600 Ultra] (rev a1)

I tried to look at the card while my machine was running, but all I could see was a monster cooling fan and fins trying to keep the damn thing from burning my house down. I couldn't see any markings to prove it was nV.

PS: what does YOUR card say on it?

CLOSED: Slackware 10 can't find my VGA card (long)

Hi Guys,
thanks for your help.
Like someone said: it is true that X.org detected my card correctly.

I first installed Slackware 9.1. XFree was not able to detect my card.
Then installed 10, and as posted earlier it detected my card as SiS 330 Xabre.

Now, I went to the SiS site and downloaded the Windows Drivers, (looks like those guys haven't heard of Linux).
Also went to nVidia site and downlaoded the drivers for GeForce.

Went Home and uninstalled the anonymous drivers. Installed nVidia drivers. No luck. Then installed SiS drivers, and sure enough, I have a SiS 200 Xabre card.

True I got cheated. The card has nVidia Stickers on it. And the drivers CD also shows as an nVidia drivers CD.

I am sure lots of sellers here in Singapore are cheats and people who don't use Linux end up getting cheated,

Once again thanks a lot guys. ( I can't remember your screen names).
