anymore ideas?
I'll think on that a bit.. I can say that message is a bit misleading, the system is trying to start the network interface and because the modem isn't communicating yet the interface is not available.
Not all modems play nice together, and I think this is what is happening, they're just not completely syncing up right.

well... i'm using the same modem on windows. and before i had the exact same brand (the old one that broke...) what i'm worried about -is the couple of new modifications they made to this brand modem. i'm worried they might have tweeked something under the hood and in turn broke linux support for my system. it's either the modem or linux... you know?
thanks again......

Hmm. What does windows have for the modem init string? I hope not ATZ. If it is different, write it down and put that into the kppp init1 and give it a shot. Other than that I'm out of ideas!

LOL, that was my favorite flavor of MS windows. Doesn't say much does it? I think you have to go into control panel and open the modems icon. Unfortunately I don't have MS anymore so I can't walk you through it from there. You should be able to check the properties of the modem though.

i can't really find anything that seems to flat out tell me what the init thingie is... did find this here 'view log' hidden way back in there. might be informative... i see ATZ in there.... but i'm not sure really what it all means- it's kinda greek to me.......

i don't have eth0 or DSL or anything else. i got this external modem and i got an internal modem (a broadxent) the internal modem does not have a cord running into it. it shouldn't be doing anything but just sitting there. should i try taking the broadxent out of the box?

i X'ed out and changed anything that might be offensive. anyways i don't have rxvt- but i tried out a couple of other low end ones and dud the minicom thing... this is basically what happens... i did it a couple of times and i think i hilighted the end of one/beginning of the next. basically it dials... it connects ... asks for my login and password... does the session thing... then the gibberish ...the no carrier....
login: mylogin
Password:
PPP session from (XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX) to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX beginning....~ÿ}#.!}!}!} }4}"}&} } ~
NO CARRIER
ATDTXXXXXXX
CONNECT 38400
well... it's almost 5 am and i'm about dead to the world. thanks again for helping me out. do you think i should try and reinstall kppp?
