Slackware 10.1 - Xserver freezes when switching to virtual consoles or logout

dear slackware guru's,
i recently installed slackware 10.1 on my machine. the configuration is as follows
P4 2.4 ghz
512 MB ram
80 gb sata HDD
ASUS mother board
On board graphics & sound card + realtek ethernet card
Samsung monitor
Iam facing the following issue. when system boots in runlevel 4, iam unable to access any of the virtual consoles. pressing CTRL + ALT + F1 - F7 blanks out the screen & iam unable to go either into console or back into X. the same thing also happens when i log out irrespective of whether it is root or a normal user. the only option then is to hard boot or keep pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL till the system reboots. I have done a plain vanilla implementation without any customizations with all default settings. Is anyone else facing this problem. i have googled for the same & searched user forums without much success. Please indicate any additional data i need to provide for clarifying the issue
warm regards

Slackware boots by default to the terminal login screen. Do you even make it that far? Because if its just the GUI login that is failing you may need a vid card driver or need to edit your xorg.conf file.

Try to see if it's a framebuffer problem.
Set in /etc/lilo.conf, vga=normal (comment the others vga=) and run /sbin/lilo as root, then reboot.

hi,
thanx for the inputs. i will try out the same. In my case the system boots correctly into init level 3. if i start X from the console X also starts, albiet with some fuzzy lines in the beginning. the actual problem occurs after X has started. now with X running if i try to logout or try to switch to a virtual console the whole screen blanks out & the only option is hard boot or ctrl + alt + del. as long as i just allow X to run & dont try switching consoles or logging out evrything works fine.
hope this throws more light on the issue

hi all,
found the solution for the problem. had to change driver line in xorg.conf from "vesa" to "fbdev". additionally i had to remove the line for default depth & also comment out the lines for display modes.
The problem is also solved by using xorg-fbdev.conf in place of xorg.conf

The fbdev works ok, but it's very generic and it won't use the best from your video card. Run as root: lspci
And see which VGA Compatible Controller you've so you can use the apropiate driver instead of fbdev.
