Slackware 10.0 update?

Once I install SLackware 10.0 - since I dont have cool tools like YUM or apt-get...how do I upgrade my system with the latest kernel and what not?

Thanks

There's a text file from Patrick Volkerding included in Slackware 10 explaining a safe method to upgrade. Search for a file name UPGRADE.txt (or similar --- I'm not on Slack, right now).

here is 2 tools that u will find very helpful for getting the update

slapt-get
swaret

they operate under the same concepts as the debian apt-get
you can find them via google

SWARET

Download Swaret from http://www.swaret.org.

After install it, you need to setup the swaret.conf file, under /etc. You can to setup language, repositories and Slackware version.

To upgrade the kernel, you need to:

- update the FILELIST.txt file:
Code:

# swaret --update
- upgrade the kernel:
Code:

# swaret --upgrade kernel
- Sit down and let SWARET do the rest. ;)

Good luck and enjoy.

root@linux:/home/pinter# swaret --upgrade kernel
swaret 1.6.2-1

Did nothing for me. I am on the 2.4 kernel still lol

You can't upgrade from kernel 2.4 to 2.6, via Swaret.

If you want to upgrade to 2.6, you'll need to download the kernel 2.6 package from a site (such as http://www.slackware.no), because the 2.6 tree is not the offical for the distro.

The kernel 2.6's package is under testing tree.

Try from there.

You said you're using Fedora Core 2....you can't upgrade from Fedora to Slackware, if that's what you're trying. ;)

We have even cooler tools like our own intelligence. There are some that use the tools already described. You will find that most long time Slack users read the changelogs, download the updated packages (wget seems to be most popular) and use upgrakepkg to handle the update.
I update my kernel the same way but that is not the most common at least on here. After users get familiar with Slack and become more knowledgeable about linux, most people will upgrade their kernel by compiling their own. I did that a few times with 2.2 and 2.4 but haven't felt the desire to do it again as my system is working fine and I have no need for 2.6 to run any hardware.
Good Luck to you.
