Slackbuilds.org should be a sticky ?
 

Hello,

I had some problems finding packages until I found http://slackbuilds.org/

When you click "packages" on the Slack homepage it does not mention this site. It seems difficult to find for the new comer.

So far, I have found the Slackbuilds site very good. It has a clear HowTo and good selection of common packages.

Slackbuilds.org is a project making unofficial Slackware packages. Though they mostly work, they are not built the same way that Pat builds official Slackware packages. The link from Slackware.com that you mention, The Slackware Package Browser, is a link to official Slackware packages.

For other Slackware packages (also unofficial) check Alien BOB's repository of Slackware packages.

To clarify, SlackBuilds.org is a project to provide user-contributed unofficial SlackBuild _scripts_ that other users can use to make their own Slackware packages. SlackBuilds.org does not provide any binary packages.

No, it's not.

They're not packages. They're build scripts that *make* packages.

No, they're not *identical* to Pat's build scripts, as some "extending" was necessary to meet our goals. The "extensions" are not obtrusive at all, and in fact, some of them are now part of the official Slackware sources in those cases where stuff added to Slackware originated at SlackBuilds.org.

If this were a poll, i would vote: YES.
On the other hand, i don't think it hurts making it a sticky :)

I would like to play the Devil's advocate and say it should not be a sticky.

I use slackbuilds.org almost exclusively and appreciate the work put into an excellent utility for adding applications to Slackware. As good as the site is however, it is not the only one out there. I don't think LQ should start playing favorites with respect to sites like this. If you like the site, acknowledge them in your sig or suggest it as a solution in threads where it could be one.

My 2 cents.

Or make a sticky with all of the common repositories, indicating what's good and bad about each of them and whether SlackBuilds are included (or provided exclusively), if installable packages are available for download, if it works well with slapt-get etc.

I personally use slackbuilds.org and Alien Bob's packages, but sometimes use slacky.eu as a guide for creating my own SlackBuilds (I know how and do create SlackBuilds from scratch, but I'm lazy and sometimes packages require certain build procedures that I don't want to play with to get to work, and so slacky.eu is a great resource -- although I don't like how their SlackBuilds are laid out or their defaults [and therefore I just adapt them to my needs]).

I'm sure that if the Slackbuilds guys want to wor with LQ in some way that Jeremy would not turn them down. There is a thread open in the suggestions and feedback forum about this idea.

Sorry to have offended you. What are the scripts for? Building Slackware packages. You don't have to split hairs. Or should we go about correcting your LQ posts?

My point was just to clarify that they are unofficial. From reading forums and irc chats it would seem that some people think that packages built with Slackbuild.org scripts are the same as packages that come from Slackware.

And my point was just to clarify your post that they are not packages but scripts. Some people might go to SBo looking for precompiled binaries and not find them.

I'm with Chess - I know that *you* know what the project is about, but others here may not, and I wanted the information to be clear for them.

As for the project appearing official, well, I don't know what to say - our homepage clearly indicates that such is not the case.

Robby, you make a good point -- there is a general listing of available options in onebuck's Slackware-Links here: http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...es_.26_Scripts (this information and more available from...;)), but its descriptions of each site aren't very thorough (sounds like a fun project...) [despite the short descriptions it really is a nice list though]. I couldn't find anything else from the Wiki, but I didn't look too hard and I could just be (well, I am) incompetent. :)
