Slackbasics.org

IMHO, a great website not only about Slackware. It was good for learning any Linux distro, and UNIX in general.

Does anybody know what happened to it?
Why is it unavailable for a long time already? :-(

dugan 05-04-2010 03:05 PM

I don't know what happened to slackbasics.org, but its downloads are still available from its Google Code page.

I don't know either. It looks like it just completely fell of the face of the interwebs.

Although this is cached info. Perhaps contacting the maintainer might yield some answers as to why it is gone.

Daniel stopped using Slackware awhile ago, and became a CentOS developer, IIRC. He probably just decided not to renew the domain since the book had moved over to the Google Code site for additional translators and contributors to work on.

Also IMHO. It would be more polite to just list the owners name and the pertinent dates. I know it is public information but putting the owners address, phone number and other details here is neither required or polite.

willysr 05-04-2010 07:10 PM

Slackbasics has been handed over the community as Daniel no longer uses Slackware, but it's still being maintained, even though not being actively maintained.

I happened to bump into this topic, and though it might still be useful to answer. As some other posters I have indicated, I do not use Slackware Linux anymore (50% practicality/50% because it never became a community project).

That said, I do still care about the book, since it is still a useful resource. So, what happened? I messed up. I had to renew the registration, but the reminders were still sent to an old e-mail address. The moment I found out, I had to pay 100 Euro to restore the domain. Now the domain is owned by one of those advertisement outlets.

I can relate to those sentiments. Been feeling somewhat the same recently. Thanks for dropping by and posting Daniel. All the best.

Hi,

Yes, I can relate to that problem. And thanks Daniel for the clarification and allowing the continuance of a good reference for a great Distribution.

I prefer Slackware because community projects suffer from a lack of leadership and coherent direction... Slack has that just about right... ! I hope LOL

I lost a domain name in the same way and now it's gone so I can relate to this - it's a pain. As already said your work is still very much appreciated and useful. Thanks for the information and Best Wishes.
