slack12 and smarttools sata issues

main issue is that i know the two sata drives i have in the box are smart enabled and capable, looking in bios shows that smart is on for the drives and the boot up shows this (and when box was windows i could use smart tools on them then)

Yet when trying to use smart tols to check the drives it says that device does not support smart

have tried smartctl -s on /dev/sda and sda - but i still get the same error, if memory serves me right i could use smarttools under slack 11 on the same pc

Anyone have any idears ?

I have never really used smartctls before, but from the man smartctl page:

Quote:
For SATA disks accessed with libata, use "/dev/sd[a-z]" and append "-d ata".
so I get an error when I use:

Code:
# smartctl -s on /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.36 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

unable to fetch IEC (SMART) mode page [unsupported field in scsi command]
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.
but when I append the -d ata:
Code:
# smartctl -s on /dev/sda -d ata
smartctl version 5.36 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

=== START OF ENABLE/DISABLE COMMANDS SECTION ===
SMART Enabled.
