slack11 problem with Xorg, nv6600, 2.6.17.13

I just did a clean install of Slackware 11 on my main workstation. I previously had slack 10.2/current installed with a custom 2.6.16.16 kernel and NVIDIA drivers. It has an AMD 3800 X2, NVIDIA 6600 PCIE, and DFI NF4-ultra-D motherboard.

I installed huge26.s during the installation and after a reboot installed the 2.6.17.13-smp kernel. Everything seemed fine, I ran xorgconfig, and used the same values I always have. I created a new user and started x. The screen came up with green and gray vertical lines. I flipped to a console and everything seemed normal. I flipped back to the X session and killed it with ctrl+alt+backspace. After that the console acted very strange. It wasnt scrolling properly. For example, I could type "ps x" and see what I was typing but once I executed the command, nothing would happen. I figured out that if I flipped to a different terminal (eg. tty2) and then back to tty1, I could see the results of "ps x". Nothing from X or KDE was still running but the console was broken. The only fix was to reboot my system. I checked the Xorg.0.log but I didnt see anything that stood out as a problem.

I had this same problem with 2.6.17.13, 2.6.17.13-smp, and 2.6.18. I'm going to reinstall everything again and try 2.4.33.?.

Nvidia drivers have to have a module re-compiled against the kernel you have installed.

Did you re-run NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run as root?

I'm not using NVIDIA drivers yet. This problem is with the Xorg nv drivers. I also tried kernel 2.4.33.3 and had the same problem.

it could just be a resolution/depth problem, what I would do is to set up xorg with a basic svga driver, then install the nvidia drivers.

It may or may not work, but basic svga is better than vertical lines, and then at least you could see what you are doing.

I installed the NVIDIA drivers and the problem is resolved....looks like a bug with Xorg's 'nv' driver.

The video card I have is a XFX GeForce 6600 256MB DDR2 DUAL DVI XXX Edition (PV-T43P-UDS7).

Thanks,

granth
