Slack11 on HP server?

Hi all,

First post/thread for me!

I need to set up a server with Slack 11 but I want to be sure the server I'm buying won't have any unsupported hardware! I'm thinking HP Proliant ML350G5, anyone have any experience with this?

Specifically, will Slack handle SAS, E200i RAID controller and NC110T gigabit adapter?

TIA

If the hardware is supported by the linux kernel, then it is supported by Slackware :)

Note that Slackware ships with a 2.4.x kernel, with a 2.6.x kernel available at install time with different versions in /extra and /testing.

Well, I guess I knew that ;) So, I should have asked if this hardware is supported by linux :)

So far I have found that the stock cciss driver will handle the E200i RAID controller, and SAS should be no problem in itself, so the issue that remains is with the NIC: HP provides a driver for it, but it is supported only for RHEL and SuSE, I'm not sure if this means that it will only work with a patched kernel or if I rpm2tgz the driver I can use it with Slackware?

Hi,

Which HP NIC are you going to use? If the driver is available for Linux then it should work with Slackware.

Could be hit and miss. Should be able to get it to work if you make sure the kernel is the same version that the driver was built for. If HP has a linux forum like Dell does it wouldn't hurt to check with them to see if anyone has used the driver with linux flavours other than the supported redhat & suse.

Yeah, the issue being precisely "hit and miss", in order to do that I would actually have to buy the server in the first place... (which is what I was trying to avoid).

I'll check up to see if HP has a forum, thanks!
