slack installer kernel panic on virtualbox

i was having the very same problem described in this thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ox-4175481316/

none of the cures for it mentioned in the thread (mostly software settings and compiling options) worked for me. the solution turned out to be a BIOS setting... i.e. turning Intel Virtualization ON in BIOS... you can do everything in software to cure this problem, but sometimes it's hardware settings mucking up the works...

I don't know why that setting isn't automatically enabled on all BIOSes. I think I had to enable it on my desktop computer too, but my htpc had it enabled by default.

i talked to 3 pc techs where i work today, and while all 3 had seen the setting often, they didn't know what it was for... now they know...

And they call themselves pc techs... :P

Anyway, if you want to read a bit more on the technology, there's this wikipedia article.

Just for future reference (and for those who may come to this via a Google search), if for some reason you don't want hardware virtualization support (or you don't want to reboot just to change your BIOS so the VM can boot), you can disable that feature and then start the VM normally, no matter what your BIOS is set to.

Settings -> System -> Acceleration -> Uncheck "Enable VT-x/AMD-V"

Depending on your system, you may also need to ensure "Enable Nested Paging" is unchecked.
