Slack install - Setup xf86config file but don't seem to have an X server up

NOTE: Cross posted in LNO, but to not much response

I have searched through this forum, the Slackware site, and other books that I have and I cannot seem to make this work. I have configured the xfree86config file but I get this error when typing "startx" from root:

Fatal Server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

XI0: Fatal I0 Error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

(This is Slackware 8.1 using Xfree86 4.2.0. My system is an Athlon 1.1 with 4 GB HD/256 RAM/Savage S3 video card with 32 MB Video RAM)

Any thoughts?

have you tried running xfree86setup?

I don't believe so. I printed and am using the Slackware Linux Essentials as my install guide, but it is apparently slightly outdated. i could only successfully get into xf86config, and the option for xf86setup is what is listed in this book, and that didn't launch for me. I also could not get into "SuperProbe" as it lists, and that would have helped me a lot. I tried entering these from the root prompt, and got something like "Bad Command or File Name" or something like that.

Sorry, it was a day ago since I had time to work on this.

Is xfree86setup a newer version of the xf86setup that I couldn't get into?

yes it uses superprobe I think. I don't know what it does, but it sets up X without all the questions about what you have and all that. Try it.

After that you will want to setup the default screen sizes by adding a Modes line to your default Depth subsection

hmm... I had a similar problem when setting up slackware 8.0 on my old box the other day. I got the the xset.tgz, xvga16.tgz, and xs3.tgz (have an S3 card) packages from the 7.1 distro and got it to work. Then again, I don't have any of the original documentaion for any of the parts on that computer, they're all used, so it was hard to be able to enter the correct values.

the slack 8.1 distro is very easy to setup

I just happened to find the commands by digging around in X's bin folder

like xfree86setup and xwmconfig

There is documentation somewhere I'm sure

I had a horrible time geting 8.1 to work, that's why I d/led 8.0 instead. (not like I'm using it for anything important anyway, I'm just playing with it)

That was the magic word, David!

Quick and painless, much better than the xf86config I tried.

Thanks, you saved my sanity!

superprobe is not in Slack 8.1. I am reasonably certain it was removed from xfree86 in version 4.1, but it is late and my mind is not all here.

DavidPhillips 01-04-2003 11:55 PM

cool, glad you got it going

Hi I ran into the same problem too. but since I encountered that after a fresh install, i just reinstalled the whole thing. But I remember editing the hostname or something like that in gui mode before it stopped starting X
