Slack+Fluxbox - Post Installation Tasks?
hey guys, I've just install Slackware and Fluxbox windows manager. What's next ?
I mean I suppose I have to configure some stuff, update my system, change theme etc etc. First of all I need to activate my wifi card because I can't have the laptop on my desk using ethernet all the time. |
How can we tell you what's next?
It's like: "I'm going to drive somewhere tomorrow, how much fuel will I need?". Depending on how you drive, and how far you're travelling, the answer varies from nothing to everything. |
What you COULD do is regenerate menus with 'fluxbox-generate_menu' and have a look at:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fluxbox |
In addition to generating a useful menu, I would fix the font size and font of all themes so you don't go blind when they try and change it to a 6 point font on your 1024x768 or larger resolution...
~/.fluxbox/overlay Code:
! The following line will prevent styles from setting the background. |
Other things to consider: Do you want icons (fbdesk or idesk). I personally find that just adding WBAR makes a fluxbox set-up look quite sophisticated - even though I use the menu more often than not.
You might also want to put a few icons in the task bar (eg volumecontrolicon, networkicon etc). These are all packages that you need to download and install separately. |

Look at this excellent entry in Alien Bob's wiki: Configuring your network in Slackware Regarding Fluxbox tweaking, most of the action takes place in ~/.fluxbox directory where you will have to edit configuration files. Two good places to start are: - The Fluxbox list of features: http://fluxbox.org/features/ - The Fluxbox wiki: Fluxbox-wiki |

Moc launched in a terminal is also pretty cool. |
Depending on your system/hardware specification you may wish to discover/use lite applications.
1> terminal - sakura - http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=sakura&sv= 2> text-editor - mousepad - part if stock install 3> calculator - xcalc - part of stock install ...or - galculator - http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=galculator&sv= |
I reconfigure some of the keybindings. Not Fluxbox related, but take a look at installing Conky, and of course slapt-get if you don't already have it.

wicd-client And youll be able to configure wifi like a champ. Add it to the startup for a permanent network manager in fluxbox. Also, i would personally suggest against slapt-get... |
