slack-current sound gargles

Did a clean install of slack 10.1, downloaded slack-current and installed, took alsa-driver-1.0.8_2.6.11-i486-1.tgz from testing and installed that since I have the 2.6.11.6 kernel. First off my sound made everything in kde crash for a while, fixed that somehow but now I have no sounds from kde and xmms sound output (artsd) gargles like its not even music.

After restarting (hoping it works) still same thing, even with the 2.4.29 default kernel. Any suggestions?

anybody?

edit: tryed some more stuff. (after looking around the alsa site)
redid drivers with:
Code:
./configure --with-cards=cmipci --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install
installed lib and util with:
Code:
./configure;make;make install
loaded the modules:
Code:
modprobe snd-cmipci;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss
here is what my modprobe.conf looks like:
Code:
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.8 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-cmipci
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cmipci
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
modinfo soundcore returns:
Code:
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.11.6/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko
description: Core sound module
author: Alan Cox
license: GPL
alias: char-major-14-*
vermagic: 2.6.11.6 K7 gcc-3.3
depends:
still the same. The aopen aw850 uses the CMI8738 chipset, and I used alsa doc to do the above.

I'm thinking this could be a problem with artsd or something in kde 3.4?

edit: tryed out fluxbox with xmms and changed to the alsa plugin and still same static/gargle sounds.

well since nobody can help or knows a solution i'm going to try compiling the 2.6.11.7 kernel as the changelog comments on some ALSA changes.

well going to the 2.6.11.7 kernel worked but it still shows up as the 2.6.11.6 kernel, where is the option to change the version number at, they must have missed it or something, because I'm pretty sure I didn't recompile my .6.

That's about the 4th line in the Makefile (version).

Yea, I ended up checking that but I loaded my 2.4.29 kernel just for the hell of it and it still came up in gkrellm and kcc as 2.6.11.6, strange.

I think its a problem with xmms... I keep getting it till now. Whenever i get alot of cpu or hard disk usage, xmms sound gargles, skips, crashes, or static...

I switched to amarok, and it works like a charm. I also discovered some fantastic things in amarok not found in xmms

Try different mp3 players. Also, see if you get the problem in different apps, like movie players, games, etc...
