slack-current: Firefox 1.0.3 crashes frequently

I'm not sure is this a good place to report firefox problem, but I did not find too much Linux version discussion at official forum of firefox.

Is there anybody experience frequent crash of firefox 1.0.3 on slack-current (with 2.6.11.7 kernel)? I have tried official firefox build as well as slack-current package, both of them crash frequently. I have to switch back to 1.0.2 in the end, but those glaring security problems makes me worry. The windows version on my office PC is fairly stable though.

I checked crash report of firefox:
http://talkback-public.mozilla.org/reports/firefox

It seems 1.0.2 get 747 crash reports, while 1.0.3 get 2946 reports. It seems I am not alone :)

Has anybody tried to build firefox on slackware?

i'm using firefox 1.0.3 (slackpack from current) on slackware 10.1 (kernel 2.4.29)...

no crashes or anything like that... everything seems fine here, AFAIK...

I second that with 2.4.29 slackware-current.. Crashed once out of nowhere, but thats it.. Less than before in my case..

Thanks very much for the information. Looks like there's something wrong with my setup. I have to check careful sometime.

Anybody tried 1.0.3 with 2.6 kernel?

xushi 04-28-2005 10:01 AM

Second that (too). Firefox 1.0.3 with slack current (2.6.11.7), no crashes whatsoever.

Did you try and see the reason for the crash? or any errors that are generated?

Artanicus 04-28-2005 10:02 AM

Is there any pattern in the crashes? Hmm.. does talkback have an option to review the report sent? That could prove useful..

Firefox and Mozilla Suite have always crashed on me. The reason though seems to be connected to the xine-mozilla plugin I use for streaming radio. Other than that, they never crash doing anything else.

I just have a good read of the talk-back crash report of firefox 1.0.3, it turns out 1.0.3 crashes on 2.6.x kernel most frequently. Here's the topmost platforms in 314 crashes (I copied it from that report):

Code:

    Count  Platform List
    21  [Linux 2.6.11-gentoo-r6]
    16  [Linux 2.6.5-7.151-default]
    16  [Linux 2.6.10]
    13  [Linux 2.6.10-gentoo-r6]
    13  [Linux 2.4.29]
    12  [Linux 2.6.8.1-12mdk]
    11  [Linux 2.6.8-24.14-default]
    11  [Linux 2.6.11.7]
    ...

Could it be the preempt option? I've turned on these in my build:
Code:

CONFIG_PREEMPT=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y

My kernel also has them enabled
Code:

CONFIG_PREEMPT=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y

I'm running Slackware current and Firefox was incredibly unstable for me. Actually recently stopped supporting it and switched to Konquerer. I have a lot of reasons not to use Firefox but the stability was a major issue for me. The crashes became a major issue with 1.0.3 like they have for you. I'm running 2.4.29 though.

firebird: Do you get any useful errors if crashing when running firefox from a terminal?
Would be nice if we could narrow the problem to GTK, a kernel issue, or something else..

The same question goes for anyone having frequent crashes..

I am using Firefox 1.3 from current with a custom 2.6.11 kernel and it works fine. I have never had a crash.

win32sux 04-28-2005 11:53 AM

are you using any extensions (when these crashes happen)??

i also second the suggestion to start firefox from a terminal and check for errors upon crashing...

Boow 04-28-2005 12:17 PM

It might also be a buggy plugin

Artanicus 04-28-2005 12:21 PM

I for certain know that some of thew themes are real FF killers. A couple of version back I remember that Whitehart, platinun and saferfox expanded caused frequent crashes on trivial things like openin contect menus. All theme errors ive encountered were GTK related.

Crashers, are you running any extensions, plugins or themes?
