slack 9.1 and old external cd drive

im trying to install slack 9.1 on an old laptop (think pad type 9545 (it has 24 megs of ram)) and it won't see my cd drive (microsolutions backpack bantam model #181100), i tried booting with boot disks (pportide.i and old_cd.i ) and it still doesnt detect the drive, even after i tried
ramdisk hdd=cdrom

the thing under setup doesnt detect it either

has anyone else tried to install slack on an old laptop with similar conditions?

im a , this is my second linux box first slack. my other is suse 8.1.
