Slack 9.1 and Gnome 2.4 theme question

What is the deal man? I use to run R-Hat 7.3 and themes and customizing was GREAT! I could do anything and everything with the my desktop. With the new versions of Gnome it looks to me as if many of my muched loved customizing options have vanished and or changed :'(

I am downloading themes from art.gnome.org and cant figure out how to install new themes. I have tried to click and drag as it says but that doesn't work. I have tried x-tracting the files in my .themes folder and tried the install button also all with no success. I click the install button it appears to do something but nothing shows up in my windows border tab or icon tab.

Any help would be great.

Signed,
"the never ending quest for the perfect desktop"

Try this as root :

#tar xvzf themefile.tar.gz -C /usr/share/themes

replace with xvjf if in bz2 format

hope it helps !

Negitive,

I use to be able to open Nautilus and theme it from there. I must go into Desktop Pref / Themes and change from there now.

I copied my theme to /usr/share/theme but it will not show up in the theme GUI .

I have a hard time working if things on my desktop are out of place

Did you unpack to /usr/share/theme or /usr/share/themes?

I've had the same problem, with Gnome not recognizing themes even when they're in the right place. I don't actually have any gnome packages installed (I just use fluxbox + a couple of gtk apps) and I've found the easiest way to change gtk themes is to just edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (make one if you don't have one already).

Add this line:
include "/usr/share/themes/pathto/yourtheme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"

where the bit in quotes is the path to the gtk-2.0/gtkrc for that theme. There's also a prog called the gtk-theme-switcher (I think, it's linked on the fluxbox homepage anyway) which does the same thing through a gui.

You might need to install the gtk-engines package from slackware.com (I couldn't find it on the cd) in order to get some pretty pixmapped widgets (see sig).
