You should not have to put this in rc.local. It's already in rc.alsa.

Have you folks tried alsaconf? I had the modules problem when I rebuilt the kernel for the Pentium III since it made sense to do so with Dropline being 686 optimized. This broke nVidia and Alsa. Alsa came back OK except for the sound module errors. This also busted the irDA on my system for some reason - I think due to the maestro3 Inspiron 8000 workaround not enabling. After mucking around for a half hour with checking configurations, I just reran alsaconf and things seem to be ok again - 8000 workaround kicks in and avoids the smc-ircc problem, I think.

I don't have a rc.alsa.

Heck. I didn't even know it existed. And oddly enough didn't seemed to be installed. Going through the source files (driver files) and into the utils directory I found it. Ran the little sucker and lo' and behold, all is good.

Thanks to everyone and their patience.

Now to go work on other fun things like ldconfig and the wireless card (items for another thread)
