slack 9.1+, 2.6.1 kernel, acpi, suspend.. or not?
 

HELP!

I compiled 2.6.1 flawlessly and everything is working, except for the fact that my laptop won't suspend anymore. It worked fine in 2.4.22 using apm as a module.

I have a Dell C640 Laptop..

EDIT: I also want to include I have the latest A09 BIOS

ACPI "appears" to be working somewhat, I can get thermal temps, battery status, etc.. however, when I close my laptop lid, it does not suspend. The screen goes blank and I cannot recover without hitting cntrl-alt-del to reboot the machine.

I have read about the C640 needing a new dsdt.. (whatever that is) but I haven't read anything about the new 2.6 kernels.. these were all written for the 2.4 series and included manually compiling acpi into the kernel with a modified dsdt.

Do I need to do that?! *prays*

OR.. Do I just need to configure acpi somehow to react when I close my laptop lid.. is so.. how?

Any help, as always, is very appreciated.

Everyone's always so helpful until I ask a question. Odd.

Anyway, I dumped acpi and went back to apm. Everything is working fine and I can suspend my laptop again.

The suspend function for ACPI is officially labeled as "experimental."

If you do menuconfig, go to the ACPI section, and with Suspend highlighted press '?', it will give you a brief description that says that it is still based on a software suspend, and is therefore experimental, bla bla bla.

Maybe, somebody, somewhere out there, got it to work, but there's really no guarantee that his or her solution will work in your case.

So yeah, use APM until ACPI support gets better.
