If it's in the change log it's officially released.

upgrading vs. installing?

So,

I seem to have read on these forums that plenty of people keep simply 'upgrading' bits and pieces of their original install.

Do the official cd's make this easier, or are people downloading source files for specific things (for example, latest gcc), and then compiling/installing themselves?

See, I've only recently gotten 8.1 and my enligtenment environ. customized to where I like it, and having to go through all that again, while perhaps a learning process, just doesn't seem like much fun.

Is it necessary to wipe out 8.1 to install 9.0, or is there an 'upgrage' option?

As far as I can tell, enlightenment isn't even in the distro anymore, you can check under /gnome in the top level of any of the mirrors and the enlight-whatever.tgz and (this is what ticked me off) eterm-whatever.tgz seem to be gone...

Cheers,

I don't see it, either, but you would know better than I.

By the way, very nice to get a reply for you--I would like to say "thank you" for all of your posts on wireless networking. Most of my searches on the topic got very relevant answers from posts you have replied to others on. They are very, very helpful. So thanks for being out there.

That out of the way, understand I'm still very new to linux/slack world. When I'm browsing the FTP, I see all of the filename.tgz packages. If I decided I wanted to update a particular package that wasn't enlightenment, is there a best method?

Something like:

1. Somehow figure out dependencies.
2. Uninstall the original .tgz
3. install the new .tgz

The reason I mentioned #1, is I've noticed that sometimes I've installed a .tgz that never "worked" (either wasn't really installed, or I couldn't find where it went..doh). Never was an error message generaged by the pkg installer.

Any tips? Or a place to rtfm?

Oops, nevermind. found it, I guess:

upgradepkg oldpackagename%newpackagename

Of course, this seems the lazy way out, if it works...

I would like to learn the 'proper,' old-fashioned way.
