Slack 9.0

Hi,

Newbie question. Is there a big difference between Slack 9.0 and 8.1. What's this gcc 3.2 based thing?

Yes, there is a very big difference between Slack 9 and 8.1. A big one is KDE 3.0.3, which is a mainly a big security update for SSL handling. Many other packages including the kernel-now at the latest stable 2.4.19- have also been updated. The gcc 3.2 based means that it ships with the 3.2 version of the gcc (GNU c compiler) Version 3.2 adds more architecture optimizations and produces faster code than version 2.95.3 although compilitation does take longer.
