Question Slack 13.37 x86_64 - OK for over a year, but suddenly can't boot. Hardware?

Sudden problem yesterday booting via grub 0.97 legacy which has worked fine since 2008.
I have 4 disks, 3 of which have various versions of Slackware, also WinXP and Win7.
Now cannot boot any of the OS on one of the disks, but the other OS/disks boot OK.
This morning all seemed OK - once. First boot of Slack13.37 x86_64 was OK.
Subsequent reboots failed.

There is no error message. For Slackware 13.37 and Slackware 13.1 the system just reboots
immediately after selecting the OS from the grub menu. Win7 hangs with a startup message.

I can still run Slack 13.1 and 12.2 which are on different disks.
When I mount the partition /dev/sdb7 containing Slack 13.37, the files look OK via Dolphin file manager.
smartctl -H says "PASSED" for all 4 disks.
'reiserfsck --check --logfile check.log /dev/sdb7' says "No corruptions found"
But it didn't actually create a logfile, and I don't understand the rest of the stuff attached below.

Starting Slack 13.1 on /dev/hda9 works fine via grub command line, but Slack 13.37 on /dev/sdb7 doesn't.

find /boot/vmlinuz shows expected results i.e. it lists (hd3,6) and the other partitions with Slackware
root (hd3,6) says "Filesystem type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83"
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb7 ro vga=791 says "[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x3800, size=0x5948a0]"
boot - the system instantly reboots and I'm back to the grub menu.

I'm supposing it's a hardware problem, but it's weird that neither smartctl nor reiserfsck show anything.
untoward. And a quick browse of the files on the partitions that won't boot doesn't show anything strange.

Edit - I also tried booting via the Slackware 13.37 install DVD. When the install DVD
boots there are instructions on how to boot in an emergency. I tried that too.
It loaded the kernel and (I think) initrd, followed by instant reboot.
boot: huge.s root=/dev/sdb7 rdinit= ro

Any suggestions gratefully received, before I reluctantly buy a new 1̶G̶b̶ 1TB disk and start
reinstalling tons of stuff.

Cheers,
Peter

Have you checked to make sure a SATA cable hasn't come loose or gone bad? I had a SATA cable go bad on me, and it would cause system freezes sometimes. Maybe one could be causing your system issues.

Have already reseated the SATA cable - didn't seem to make any difference.
Will try to replace when I can find where I've put spare cable.

Also - have noticed that the problem is intermittent. Leaving the PC off e.g. overnight - then it's OK.
But try to reboot after about 30 mins then it fails. Maybe it's temperature related, but nothing has changed recently relating to temperatures or cooling. I monitor disk remperatures via SMART and they are usually around 35 C.
SMART records an absolute maximum of 40 C.

Cheers,
Peter
