Have Slack 12.1 running generic-smp kernel. Made initrd using Alien Bob's initrd_command_generator script. Thank you, Alien Bob. Using max memory 512MB. Tried KDE, system locks up on exit from X. Tried xfce4, same result. This is a fresh install of Slack 12.1 but I migrated all of my user files from another hard drive which ran Slack 12.0... This included all of my user dot files. Tried hugesmp kernel, same result. What is the best way to fix this?
I don't think "it's locked" but the screen going black.
I also have T20 with custom kernel and by coincidence I saw that with telinit 4 I have the same problem. Did you changed the default init level? (/etc/inittab)

I have Slackware-12.0 too lazy to try 12.1 :-|
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. No, I never change inittab. As much as
anything that's why I much prefer Slackware over Ubuntu for
example. I always want to start at the shell prompt.
And actually the entire computer locks up
it really does. I give it lots of time
to recover. It never recovers.
When I had this issue it was simply a video configuration problem that was locking up X on exit. Try running xorgsetup or xorgconfig from console to generate a new xorg.conf file. Xorgsetup is automated whereas xorgconfig takes a few minutes longer and will ask you questions about your hardware. You can backup your existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf first.
1. Memory problem (experienced in 2 (two) Thinkpad T20. Of course TOO much of coincidence that occurs only after log-out
2. As mentioned xorg.conf locks (in my machine) but in log-in, not in log-out. Try configs from here. Maybe it's a kernel issue? I have three ThinkPad T2x and I don't have a problem with none of them. (custom kernel)

Hi ludist,
Your English writing is fine. I do have a T30 with a dead
memory slot. The fix involves a pencil soldering iron.
But the T20 is fine. Thanks for the link to configs.
I think that is the issue.
In general, is it ok to copy all of your user dot
files into a new installation or is it better to
just bring in your documents and let the dot files
be generated by the new installation?
Hey "The GNUinator". This is my first post on the LQ forums and you get it. I had the same problem. It is the new Xorg. If you still have the xorg.conf from your 12.0 install, try using that.
For me, I'd like to try using the new xorg. Can anyone suggest how to modify the xorg.conf file so that I don't have to use the old file. Are there any potential problems with using the old xorg.conf?

Hello all,
The fix turned out to be in this post. It was an xorg.conf issue.
I followed the link posted by ludist and got a better xorg.conf ...

Hi Chet,
I think my problem came from using xorg.conf-vesa from the 12.1 install.
I followed the link posted by the gentleman from Greece ... wound up
with an xorg.conf that fixed the problem. What video mode are you
using in your lilo.conf ???
Good luck - and please let us know how it works out.

Right now I am using vga = 791.
I'm using a xorg.conf from a 12.0 install and it seems to be working ok for me. I was really hoping the new xorg would work w/o having to tweak settings. It turned out to be more work than using an older one.
