Slack 11 will not install.
 

Hi,

downloaded Slack 11.0, checked MD5sum, correct, burned iso image to disk...all okay.

Changed boot order to boot from CD...

Restarted PC...Searching for boot from CDRom...nope.

Boot from my current installation on hda2, Slack 10.2.

Any ideas.

Open up the CD, does it have a file that ends in ? If it does, you have burned it incorrectly.

How did you burn the image? It has happened to me in the past that I have downloaded an iso image and burned it with k3b as a data cd/dvd project rather than selecting "burn cd image" from the tools menu. This burns an unbootable iso image containing a file containing a bootable iso image.

Doesnot contain file .iso.

Burned as iso image, like I have done previously on numerous occasions.

It wont recognise the disc as bootable and boots from lilo.conf.

Downloaded from mirrors, now trying download from torrents. Will burn the first cd to disc and then try again.

Downloaded on windows, burned with ISO recorder. Guess I may have a new coaster here. Anyway, will try again tommorow night, torrents still downloading.

I downloaded all of them iso images from this mirror. I intalled from the DVD and everything went just fine, burnt it with k3b on a BackTrack live CD, my former Slackware 10.2 had been unpartitioned some weeks ago for hardware RAID-0 purposes with my gaming rig. I haven't burn the CD images yet, but I will in order to install them on a couple of machines at the office without DVD.

I know it doesn't really answer your question, but if you are just trying to upgrade slackware you don't need a bootable cd. If you can mount it, just follow the directions in UPGRADE.TXT.

Was DL of Slackware 11.0 from Linuxtracker, when at 99.9% 0:00 remaining, it caused hang on my LT, mouse response very slow, took my over 15 minutes to verify that work in my few open tabs was complete. CTL-Alt-Del would not bring up TM so I could check processes. Download later in BtT allowed my CPU fan to slow down, but still running @ 2.13 Ghz. Normal TurnOff failed to work 4x, so I hit the power button. Not sure if BtT, Linux track or slackware. Just beware. LOGGING OFF

I am having the same weird problem. The computer will not recognize the cd as bootable. I've tried the DVD and cd-rom versions. I can put in the 10.2 cdrom and it will boot to the boot prompt than I switch the cd out and put in the 11 cd and than hit enter and it complains it can't find the kernel, so than I can type in /boot/kernel/26huge/bzimage root=/dev/hda1 it takes off and boots up to my existing desktop.

I can take the same cdrom and disk and put it in a different computer and it will boot up like any other boot disk, no problems. Put the cdrom and disk back to the other machine and it will not boot. It will boot every other boot disk I have, including 10,10.1,10.2

so is there away from the boot: prompt to type in the command to boot up or install the 11. I don't want to do the upgrade. This really has me baffled.

If your computer's BIOS supports booting from a USB stick you can try the following:

Get the 37 MB file from CD 5 or the DVD, or download it at http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...sb/usbboot.img

Transfer the image to a usb stick using (if your USB stick is not /dev/sda, then supply the correct device name or you run the risk of erasing your SATA drive for instance).
Then, plug the USB stick into the computer, and leave the CDROM in the tray because that is where the packages are... and boot the PC, picking the USB stick in the boot selector menu.
The boot and installation process will be identical to what you'd see if you booted from a CDROM.

I can boot the kernels from the boot: prompt but it takes me to my existing desktop - need the slackware 11 desktop to get to the installer.

/boot/kernel/26huge/bzimage root=/dev/hda1

I am thinking that one has to change the root= part to point to the slackware 11 image.


I have never run into something like this. The cd and dvd are useable, just doesn't boot. I can boot other distros. I have done reburns at different speeds and different media even.

Thought I was the only one with this problem. At work at the moment and the torrent downloads will have completed by now. Will try again once I get home.

Since I was going to do a completely new install anyway over 10.2, I may format the hd before attempting the install of 11.

I'm sorry but from what I understand you're giving the "root=" option at boot prompt ? If you're doing that... then stop and just enter "huge26.s" or "sata.i" or whatever kernel you wish to use for the install.

Well you cant use a 10.2 disk and try to boot a 11.0 disk due to the intrid is different from version to version. Have you verified your iso file with a mdsum check? Well try download the same iso from a different mirror site. Try using a floppy boot. Just throwing things out there

I can take the cdrom and disk out of the computer I am trying to install it on and put it in another machine and it will boot the cd just fine. I put it back into the machine I want to install it into and it will not boot the cd. I can put other boot disks in and it will boot them. I can boot Sabayon, slackware 10, 10.1 and 10.2

I just redownloaded cd 1 from a different site and same story. I burnt iso's in windows and linux - doesn't seem to matter. This is a weirdest thing I have ever encountered.
