slack 10.2 default 2.4 kernel and Ram limits ?

I've been trying out some other linux brands with newer kernels as default and they just don't measure up to slack.

My question is wether the 2.4 kernel is limited to 512 mb of ram as my associate tells me or is it limited to 4 gigs?I have an AMD64 with 2 gigs of ram and I want to know if I am wasting all that ram with the 2.4 kernel.

I am aware of using the 2.6 kernel as an option but I always have problems and frankly,crappy 3d game performance with that kernel.

By default, Slackware Linux kernels will only be able to address 896Mb. You can enable support for more memory, but apparently it has an affect on performance.

There are unquantifiable amounts of webpages written about Linux's VM on the internet. Debate flies every which way. All from experts who know more about memory than there is to know about memory!

Our very own Linus Torvalds has been quoted as saying "896Mb ought to be enough for anybody." o_O

However, Con Kolivas has released a patch which will enable access of up to 1Gb without the drawbacks of highmem support. You can get the patch from his website.

Personally, I have 2Gb RAM running under a 2.6 kernel with highmem support and the performance of my system seems to be OK. I have never had performance problems (with 3d games or otherwise) using this setup. YMMV.
