Slack 10 2.6.7 crashs in 30sec

I have a Pentium 4 test box with various linux distros (Slack10 2.4.26 & 2.6.7; Ubuntu 2.6.8-1) loaded on it. All were running rock solid until I switched motherboards - sold my Abit AI7 (Intel 865PE/ICH5-R) and replaced it with Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro-G (Intel 865PE/ICH5). All my distros came up running fine except for the Slack10 2.6.7 - it boots clean (runlevel 3), I can login and do things, then it does a shutdown/reboot after 30 seconds no matter what I do....

I have since built a new test Slack10 partition on this machine and have done a fresh load of the CD #2 kernel-generic-2.6.7 and also latest Slack kernel-generic-2.6.9. Same problem occurs - boots clean, I login as root and it runs for 30 seconds, then it does a full machine reboot. I thought it might be ACPI module, but have checked and module is turned on. I can mount this test partition from a Slack10 2.4.26 distro on this box to read/modify files.

Every crash leaves its ext3 partition trashed which always forces repairs on next startup. I am a little suspicious that ext3 kernel options or initrd ext3 options might be the problem.

I have looked through all the /var/log/... files I can read and see nothing to indicate what it is choking on. I have checked the Gigabyte BIOS settings carefully. I have experimented with BIOS settings, even cleared CMOS and started over with all plain settings. The Ubuntu 2.6.8-1 kernel runs fine on this Gigabyte motherboard.
.

QUESTION: Where can I look in Slack10 for a message or dump that might give me
a hint of what is causing the crash/reboot?

I am pretty sure I need to modify something in either the Slack kernel; edit rc.modules; or change something in the /etc/hotplug/blacklist. I have been reading numerous instructions on compiling 2.6 kernels and feel ready to give it a shot - just would like to get some idea of what I should change. I know this Slack10 kernel-generic-2.6.7 is just a plain vanilla config. I can look through /boot/config-generic-2.6.7 and system.map-generic-2.6.7 to see all the kernel settings. Also, no Nvidia drivers are installed, etc.

Of course, Slack10 2.6.7 was working perfect just like it is with the Abit motherboard. I keep careful notes of all my testing on this machine and can see nothing different from when it was working before. I use a Grub boot loader instead of lilo on this machine - I have a pretty good grasp on Grub configs.

Any suggestions are welcome!

FOLLOW UP TO MY POST
====================

After failing at all attempts to work through this 30 second crash/reboot I gave up. Installed an Abit IS7 mb and all is well - problem gone. I far prefer the Abit BIOS options anyway.

Will sell the Gigabyte mb on eBay and move on.

Be glad to see Slack 10.1 with a solid bareacpi 2.6.x kernel!!! Hope we don't have to wait 6 more months.
