Unhappy SiS FB and vesa mode

Hi all,

I have (finally) managed to install and compile Thomas Winischhofer's sis drivers. Even though all seems fine, 3D hardware acceleration is not yet working, but that's not my major concern right now (I'll be back posting for that ;-)

Thing is: With sis framebuffer as a module, the vesa framebuffer has to be disabled. Did that. VGA framebuffer however is still up and running (was no mentioning of getting rid of that one). One should also remove any vga=xxx from lilo.conf. Did that.

BUT that means that at boot, with the text scrolling by, I miss the 4 left-most columns of the screen (and half of the penguin!), and the last row of the screen is printed at the top. Pretty annoying... Enabling vga=791 (as previously) in lilo.conf restores the screen neatly but disables sisfb. Grrrrrrr... what to do??!

Another (related?) thing now is that when I exit from X (logout or reboot) the background image 'hangs' and the middle of the screens starts to get brighter and brighter and brighter... not a pretty sight! When logging out (either by command or by ctrl-alt-bckspc) it hangs at that point indefinately until I can't stand the sight of the ever brighter screen and force it to end with the powerbutton. When I reboot, the brightening end when the computer actually reboots.

Oh, btw, I use a laptop with sis630 chipset (300-family).

Please tell me which log or config file to post to make this more easy to understand.

Cheers, Leon.

It's amazing, 34 views and not a single reply? Come on, there's gotta be someone who has at least experienced the same or even has some clue as how to avoid it????

Cheers, Leon.

It doesn't work for the SiS chip in XFree86 4.3. Apparently it will be included in 4.4 and was working in 4.2. Don't even try to get the parts from 4.2 and try them in 4.3 either--it still won't work.

Got xfree86 4.4.0 now, and DRI almost works ;-)

The mangled boot screen never changed though. Anyone any idea how to change this?

Using glxgears I get about 240 fps (instead of 30) but now the graphics are scr*wed. Difficult to explain, but let's say the lower left diagonal half of the screen is al lines that originate from the left top corner with rays going down to the botton... ahmmm anyone following this? ;-) In the other diagonal half I can see the graphics clear and moving smoother than ever before (This happens when running tuxracer or cube)

And in glxgears I don't see any gears at all?!

What am I missing??

I put 4.4 on as well. But had the line thing you described. The rest of my screen was blank. Didn't know if you had to recompile kernel (don't use modules) to get that fixed.

Didn't bother anyway. Went back to 4.3 because my fonts weren't as clean and I don't have time right now to figure out recompiling. Seems they moved the loading of the module from the init file in /etc/X11 to somewhere else. Bah.

I don't really need 3d accel right now anyway.
