Simple problem

I've used Mepis for a while, but just installed Slack 10.2 and I'm having a problem turning my computer off. How do I do it?

When I end session from the KDE desktop, I get a command line and I don't know the command to shut the computer down. I type "shutdown" and get what looks like a menu, but I'm either typing the commands wrong, or something because nothing will work.

Help me turn my computer off, please!

shutdown should do the job, or poweroff. these commands are generally links to the "halt" comand which is what does the actual work. I've never seen shutdown provide anythign remotely like a menu.. it just stops everything and pulls the power....

Your probably are trying looking for something like:

Code:
shutdown -h now
shutdown = command for taking the system down

-h = halt switch

now = how long until process begins

P.S. You have to be root or grant group permissions to the shutdown command to shutdown as well.

you'll have to use an acpi kernel or load the apm module.

as root issue " modprobe apm " and then " halt " .
if all shuts down ok, edit " /etc/rc.d/rc.modprobe "
and uncomment the line " modprobe apm " so it's allways loaded at boot.

Blitzkreig75, next time, remember you've the manual page which can help you with your doubts about any command, as example, type:
Code:
man shutdown
