The thread that resulted in this poll was "Slack 13.0 proftpd works only for anonymous". I don't know what the user helcik did, but on my default 13.1 system I simply uncommented proftpd in "/etc/inetd.conf" and I was able to login as any shell user, except for "root", because "root" is listed in "/etc/ftpusers".

Just because something does not work for one user, this should not be a reason to remove something from a distro.

As you can see in the other thread, the user helcik is starting proftpd in a non-default way "> proftdp -n -d5"; I don't see a "root" prompt "#", so that may well be the cause of the problem.

No - my vote is do not remove proftpd from slackware.

The reason for this poll is not the problem the user had in the linked thread but the late security issues ProFTPd has had.

Well - the request for this poll was made in the thread "Slack 13.0 proftpd works only for anonymous".

No??

imho, security issues with proftpd, which are the reasons for this poll, have nothing to do with "proftpd-works-only-for-anonymous".

And as other people on this thread have stated, the security issues with proftpd have been properly addressed.

That is correct. Also, my tests show that proftpd does work for normal, non-root users. Oops, wrong thread.

Not yet they haven't. We're still on 1.3.3c in -current and elsewhere.

Wait, there's been ANOTHER hole in ProFTPD since this poll started? Heh.

vsftpd is the clear winner at this point and is the primary FTP service used and supported by most Linux distributions. It's been several years since I stopped using ProFTPd. I won't be bothered if it's removed.

I weighed in rather comprehensively in my post contained in the thread HERE

FWIW, I don't like the way *either* poll was constructed. For more info, pls see the details in my post at the link above.

Hope that helps :)
