should i be concerned (defragment?)...


fsck auto checked my ext3 drive as it had been mounted for the 22nd time and it said 12% non continuous should i do anything about it?

this is the drive where i store all the source code of programs compiled as well as anything i download...

No, you don't really need to defrag your linux drive that much. It's just a good idea to run fsck every once in a while and BACK UP!

you aren't concerned with fragmentation in linux at all.

will the "12% non continious" rectify it self automatically?

by the way does this mean the partition is 12% fragmented?

it means that 12% of files are fragmented (or non-contigous, love that word). Highest it ever hit on my system was 5.7 but it's now down to 2.8% and I dunno why.

just out of curiousity, how do you defragment a disk under linux?

The kernel can actually defragment some drives while idle.
