Sharing printer...
Hi,
I previously had a Win2k server sharing a USB HP7450 printer to the network, all the Windows and Linux PCs had no trouble printing to it. A Linux Slackware 10.2 server is now running the network, but nothing can print to the printer. The server itself was able to send a test page that did print out normally. From the network printer wizard in Windows it can -browse- and see the server as one of the PCs on the network but the printer attached to the server never shows up. In /etc/samba/smb.conf on the server I added the same workgroup that the Windows PCs use but they still cannot see it, is there something else that I need to do to get the printer to show up? |
Hi,
I figured this out (sort of), SECURITY in smb.conf had to be set on SHARE, Windows can see the printer in the wizard now but cannot find a driver for this printer even if I point it right at the CD or went through the driver installation from the CD, or from the latest drivers that I d/l'ed from HP's website. Printer = HP Photosmart 7450 From what I recall from something I tried a while back there is some issue with networking this printer in Linux but I don't recall what it was, I may have to put the Windows server back up until I figure this out. Yep, networking is not supported...
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/support...hotosmart.html Oh well, back to Windows until I get another printer or a Jet-Direct interface. |
Hi again,
I came across an old HP Laserjet 4 printer that needed a little work done to it before it would print, my Linux server liked it and is printing from both Windows and Linux workstations. |
There is a way to share printers from a linux box CUPS server without using samba. I used to do it when I had a win2k box in the house. It was a good altrnative to running samba for an ocassional print job on a home lan.
If your interested this is the page that got me going with it: http://www.owlfish.com/thoughts/wini...003-07-20.html |
