several config issues

hello,

sry for my bad english, but i'm from germany....

I used the help and since i am pretty new to slackware (10.1) i did not find the answers i needed.

1. Sound:

I have an a10 Samsung notebook. It uses the via 82xx sound chip. I looked through this forum and ran alsaconf and it found my soundcard. then i ran alsamixer and turned everything up and unmuted it. when doing an startx as root (have not tried it as a different user) arts is crashing. XMMS is running, but there isnt any output. I do not know what else to do? plz help....

2. wLan

Since I am using a notebook i am also using a wLan card. It is recognized under the system and working without any configuration. My question: is there any tool working with kde that makes it easy to configure the card and that shows useful things f.e. the link strength.

3. Energy saving

Under windows (sry) I am using the suspend to disk option pretty often. So i wanted to use it in linux too. But the problem is that, when i want to bring the notebook into suspend to disk it is just turning off the backlite of the display and locking the workstation. (ACPI is activated)

4. Kernel [FOUND]

Do you know an easy tutorial about installing and configuring a linux kernel. I would like to upgrade the system, for i am thinking the energy prob is going to be soled after that. -- solved that issue already

thank you very much for answering

2. wLan
Try KWiFiManager?

K --> Internet --> More Applications --> Wireless LAN Manager (KWiFiManager)

2. after u ran alsamixer did u run "alsactl store" also to store the values?

thx for the answers... i did not store the settings..... did it now :)

i compiled and installed the 2.6.10...

now sound and acpi is working perfectly....

but i now have a worse issue....

booting the new linux i do not have any console.... the screen just stays blank during boot...

if i wait a while and type in blind my logindata and after that the startx the screens comes (X)

pushing ctrl alt f1+ also just brings me a blank page... is it due to something i implemented into the new kernel (WHAT?)?? or is it just because there is something not loaded or so????

i have also gotten another smaller problem: my touchpad is not behaving the same way it usually did... usually it was (before updating the kernel) when doubleklicking on the touchpad and holding it it was doing the same thing as holding the mousebutton on a regular mouse....

thx

recompile your kernel and make sure you have vesa vga support and Framebuffer Console support enabled. These are found under the Graphics support section if using "make xconfig".

sry for my noob questions....

is that goign to change the mouse isssue too?

and if found another problem..... my wLan PCMCIA card is not working anymore....

i am trying my best... menuconfig took me about 3hours..... i have red about every help there was.....

is there a way to get my old config back? i do not want to go through the whole thing again.......

i must have jumped all of those options... there is my graficchip (s3savage) listed... should i compile vesa and s3 into the kernel or is it enough to compile just the s3 into the kernel?

reddazz 02-19-2005 10:43 PM

I always include vesa, but I really don't know what the consequences will be of omitting it. I find "make menuconfig" tedious, so I use "make xconfig" and it takes a few minutes to select my options and then a few more to compile the kernel. I can't really help you with your other problems, but others will definitely help.

thx y'all...

[update] solved the problem with the graphic.... just installed the s3 driver....

but my wLan PCMCIA card is still not working.... it was running with the prismII orinoco driver before (FCC-ID WP210P).... pcmcia is loading... but there is no new eth1 generated.... (using the rhineII onboard LAN also).... i compiled the pcmciadriver and the carddriver directly into the kernel.... KWifiManager is giving me no interface....

ifconfig also just shows rhineII
