Setting up proxy for CLI programs like dig

I connect to the net through a proxy. Everything runs fine thru FireFox etc.

But now if I want to do something like :
%traceroute www.google.com

It doesn't work. It is able to resolve the ip correctly for google.com but after that it all hangs up.

I guess this is because it doesn't know that it has to go through 172.*.*.* port 8080 to connect to the net. How could I configure this for dig, traceroute etc. etc.?

Thanks

Not.
Your proxy can only handle http traffic (and perhaps https and ftp as well), which dig, traceroute, ping etc... are not.

Yes, these can use a HTTP proxy for their communication. This is a good thing, because most corporate networks only allow HTTP traffic out. Ping, dig, traceroute are completely unrelated protocols.
