Question Setting printer and sound for users. Slackware 12.1

Hello!
After using Ubuntu for a while, I've just installed Slackware 12.1 to give it a try. Installation went ok but now, I face the following problems:

a) No sound for my user. I have sound for root but when accessing as my user I get this message:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I think I have to add permissions for my user to use sound, etc. How do I do that?

b) I cannot install my b/w laser xerox printer. It is a Xerox Phaser 3117 (it can also use the Samsung ML 6040 driver). When trying to add this printer, none of these drivers are there. Is there a way I can get Slack printing? :-)

Thanks in advance for your cooperation,
glore2002.-

a) Make sure your user is a member of the appropriate groups. As root, edit /etc/group to add the desired user to the audio group:
Code:
audio::17:user1,user2,etc
You might want to read the README and HOWTO files on the root of your slackware CD for more installation tips.

b) The drivers for samsung printers have to be installed seperately, I have used the splix package for that. See http://slackbuilds.org/repository/12.1/system/splix/ (and read what other packages you have to install). Not sure if I had to fumble with configuration or that it worked out of the box after installing the driver+dependencies, but those should be all the ingredients. Also, don't forget to (re)start cups and make it start on every boot:
Code:
chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups
/etc/rc.d/cups start

Read especially CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT on Slackware-12.1 CD1.
All your questions are answered in the files on that CD.
You have no need to touch /etc/rc.d/rc.cups at all.

If you want an easier way to add you user to the audio group (note that you should also add your user to the cdrom, plugdev and video groups for other reasons -- see CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT on your install CD1/DVD for more information), issue the following command as root:
Code:
gpasswd -a user group
You would obviously have to change "user" to your username and "group" to the group you want to add your user to (for example, "audio").

Wink Thanks for your help!

Thanks friends for your valuable help. As soon as I get home I will try your suggestions. I really like Slackware. If I can make my printer and the rest of the devices work, I will keep trying it.

Thanks again,
glore2002.-
