Setting DISPLAY Variable for software

How can I set the DISPLAY variable in Slackware 10 so applications like Evolution can load? the DISPLAY variable is set for DISPLAY=0:0 now, but when I run the evolution installation, it fails stating that the DISPLAY variable is not set.

Is this my system or just Evolution? BTW can someone recommend a solid linux e-mail system that is faster than evolution but has similar functions? Evolution and Kmail are too slow for my laptop, but I need the functionality. I mainly need a outlook express type solution.

Thanks,

Tom

For my part I succeded with evolution installation only with dropline-installer.

I tried to compile it, compile the beta version... all fail as it required to much old version packages
I tried to install it from the official installer from ximian site... failure again

I hope you will be more lucky than me.
