server upgrade loses Apache and samba permissions

I have upgraded from Slack 10 to 14 stepping through versions. When I put the new server on the ntwk I can't map to samba drives. While Apache works I get access forbidden messages when pages link to other directories. Appropriate daemons are running. I started with a mirror of the production server then applied successive version upgrades. I have been using Linux for years in various flavors.

Talking about errors IMHO isn't half as interesting (or efficient) as showing us actual details: what were the perms initially and what are they now?

As I said in the post I started with a mirror of the original server onto the new machine. To be clear I did a partition by partition image copy. I have verified that there are no Mode, Owner or Group permission changes in the directories. In addition the specific owner and group ID numbers have not changed in the etc passwd and related files although additional IDs have been added by the version update process. I have been using and administering Unix and Linux installs of various flavors since the 1970's (Unix, Zeus, SCO, and several Linux distros). While the solution may end up being a 'duh' moment, I was hoping that someone might have encountered the issue previously.

That means:
  • Samba has been upgraded from version 3.0.37 to 3.6.18.
  • Apache Httpd has been upgraded from version 1.3.41 to 2.4.6.
Did you modify your configuration files in "/etc/" after the upgrade?

If not, then your configuration files in "/etc/" are completely out of date and will not work with the newer versions of the software.

http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware-14.0/UPGRADE.TXT See #5.

What do the log files in "/var/log/httpd/" and "/var/log/samba/" tell you?
