sendmail: how to send mail from my yahoo e-mail address
Slackware 10.1.0 on an eth0 dhcp connection to the ISP (i.e. dynamic IP address).
I have my system set up to receive and filter mail ok, using fetchmail and procmail. I read my mail with mutt.
In order to send mail I use mutt. I have defined myself as a trusted user so that I can change the "From:" address without warning headers being included in the outgoing mail.
This is not kosher - I wish to send my e-mail to my smtp address on yahoo and have yahoo send it normally.
With Thunderbird, of course, this is not a problem - but I no longer wish to use Tb - it is too bloated and slow - Mutt is better, once you have it configured right.
The problem is asking the right question to get the right answer - in short I wish to replace Thunderbird sending mail by mutt and sendmail sending mail.
I do NOT wish my machine itself to act as a SMTP server (I hope I have expressed myself correctly there) - I wish to use Yahoo to send my mail. I want sendmail to get my mail to yahoo so that it can send it - with my genuine yahoo address.
AFAIK, you need to go into /usr/share/sendmail/cf/cf, choose a script such as sendmail-slackware.mc. Part way down it says to uncomment the line where it says
and replace mailserver.example.com with the mailserver you want to use ie yahoo.
Then you need to generate a .cf file using this .mc file. To do that follow the instructions at the top of the file, although I'm not 100% sure they're right. Where it says /usr/share/sendmail/cf, I think it should read /use/share/sendmail/cf/cf, because that's where the Build script is.
I hope this is what you're after.
Thanks Simcox1 - it is now using the yahoo - or at least attempting to use yahoo - as a smart host.
Yahoo is not responding - but that is another problem
The problem seems to be that I have slackware 10.1 and not 11.0. The "Sendmail SMTP AUTH Howto" in this slackware forum covers this: sendmail on 10.1 does not authenticate itself to yahoo. I am now installing version 11.0.
