The SSD thing was a nice catch, @unport. My system is SSD only, but since haveged is in charge that sendmail's slow down have gone for good.

The thread is a old but recently I installed an SSD in my Lenovo T400 laptop. Same exact sendmail stall problems on boot. Using haveged resolved the stalls.

Slackware 15 uses postfix rather than sendmail, but for those still using 14.x the haveged daemon seems important when using SSDs.

haveged is now official in -current...

Code:
slackware64 current changes for Wed, 13 Jun 2018 05:43:00 GMT
a/sysvinit-scripts-2.1-noarch-10.txz: Rebuilt.
rc.6: restart init when shutting down - this prevents it from holding file
handles to removed/upgraded versions of the glibc shared libraries which
  would interfere with shutdown.
rc.K: use full path to telinit
  rc.M: start rc.atd and rc.crond
rc.M: don't remove cron tempfiles (moved to /run/cron)
  rc.S: start rc.haveged
