See my minimal install HOWTO

I've worked up a minimal install HOWTO for Slackware 8.1/9.1. It's still in a beta stage- ugly document and not as concise as I'd like. But anyone who's interested in the subject will find useful info on how to create a minimal install ('Optimal Subset' I call it), that will give you just the basics, including the tools you need to extend the installation according to your needs. It also includes a section on how to 'KILL BILL'. This is a method for starting Slackware by double-clicking an icon on the wim95/98 desktop. Comments, suggestions and additions are welcome. If you've worked out a tighly knit mess of dependencies for some feature in Slackware, send me the info and I'll add it to the HOWTO. The HOWTO also contains some useful pointers to help you choose your boot method, file system, window mananger and desktop environment.PHOENIX OS HOWTO

Well, come on guys! 66 people have looked at my posting. Has anyone looked at the howto? And if so, how about a little reaction! Flame me or anything. Don't be thrown off by the PHOENIX name. This is all Slackware. Surely someone has something to say about it. Don't tell me what's right, tell me what's wrong so I can fix it. I spent all day yesterday writing it, but didn't really proof it well before posting, so I am now working on polishing up a little, but I'd like to know what needs to be changed.

hi...
it's nice...but I guess every slack user that is interested in such already figured out by him self ^^
I have tried to figure out a minimal install to be able to run mysql, proftpd, sshd and apache with php and be able compile support for _all_ php features, but unfortunately I didn't come below 800MB since I need some X libraries and stuff like that to compile freetype and similar =O
nice though....will try it if I ever get a chance ^^
but that will have to wait until I get a new PC =D

Nice work.

Very Good.... Will try this out next time I build a new system.

I'm working right now on a drastic edit of the HOWTO. Should be ready by tomorrow.

My previous system followed this excellent guide (it was a complete 500MHz Pentium III system with X, OpenOffice, Firefox, multimedia-apps, Skype, Gaim, Gimp and a bunch of other apps and it took something like 450 MB, which was truly amazing imho). Unfortunately this document seems to have disappeared. Does anyone happen to know where it lives nowdays?

Why do I keep getting a "403 - Forbidden" error on this site? Do they know something about me I don't know?
Regards,
Bill

Who knows? I seem to be able to access the page without trouble. (God what an ugly document -I sometimes wish my site weren't mirrored so much...)

Page comes up fine for me also.

TSquaredF 01-30-2008 05:51 PM

Well, maybe earthlink just doesn't like WildBlue. I get the "403 - Forbidden" very quickly.
Regards,
Bill

Well... it's the information content that counts, not the appearance. Your guide has been really helpful for me, so thanks a million for it :) Have you perhaps considered upgrading it for newer Slackware versions?

Ps. the site is working fine for me also.
