securing slack 9


Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could link me to some info on secuing slack 9. I have googled and only found info on slack 8.1, dont know if there is much of a diff but i figured i would ask anyway.

Short, but to the point.

1. Turn of Services you don't need. If certain services need to be on and have open ports, control what traffic comes in with iptables.

2. Get on the slack mailing list for security updates or download swaret, so you can patch your system as soon as a security patch comes out.

3. Review logs occasionally so you "hopefully" can catch something early.


This is the best advice I was told when I started to use slack. And to be honest it still is the best.

As always:
install ONLY the software you are using RIGHT NOW. The security god over there in Linux - Security, UnSpawn, has noted this on several occasions. Great idea! Don't install something and say "yeah, I'll get around to using that sometime" instead, install that when the time comes that you 'get around to it'.

Also, check out hardening your box in the first thread in the Security forum, all kinds of great references there!
