Screensaver won't start kde3.5.1 slack 10.2

My screensaver does not start after the designated time in kde. It's set to turn on after 5 minutes, but five minutes go by and nothing. It works when I click test, so I know it will render ok. What's the deal? I'm using kde 3.5.1 and slackware 10.2

Well I figured it out. I had to turn on APM. It works now.

Rebelscum what exactly is APM? I am having the same problem I would assume APM is power management but that didn't help that's why I am asking.

maybe check your BIOS to make sure APM is enabled there.

APM means Advanced Power Management. And win32sux is correct, if you BIOS doesn't support it you can't have it. If you BIOS is good for APM then you can enable it at the sofware level with kde control center.

Another method is to try adding "DPMS-dependent=false" (no quotes) to ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc.

Thanks for all the reply's and for future reference I tried what Xian suggested and it worked.I started having the problem after I upgraded to kde 3.5.I did not change anything in the bios before the upgrade and yes APM is disabled in my bios but it was with kde 3.4 and everything worked fine.I don't use the power management feature power management for me is turning the computer off when I am done with it.

Same Problem

Hello everyone

I am having this exact same problem, nothing suggested here has worked. My MB doesnt say APM, but I enabled the power management option, can't remember the exact name. Still had problem, tried adding the false value into Text file. Same problem, even after a restart (just to see).

I'm running Mandriva 2006/KDE 3.4, have done all the available update... thanks in advance for any other info that could possibly fix this =)

Well I set it exactly to your settings, same issue.

Did a little messing around and I guess it's the screensaver, KSwarm, all the other ones are working fine. Figures, the one that I want to use ;P.

Not sure if it's fixable or if it's just a software issue with my machine. Anyway thanks =) Quick reponse!

Be sure the [screensaver] section includes the needed DPMS entry:

[ScreenSaver]
DPMS-dependent=false
Enabled=true
Lock=false
LockGrace=60000
Saver=fadeplot.desktop
Timeout=480

ActionBottomLeft=0
ActionBottomRight=0
ActionTopLeft=0
ActionTopRight=0
DPMS-dependent=false
LockGrace=60000
Priority=10
Saver=KSwarm.desktop
Timeout=60

Like I said, only the Kswarm screensaver isn't working :/

Its symptoms are exactly as described at the top of this topic, it's just weird how it works in preview and not when it supposed to. The screen just freezes instead (until I move mouse/keyboard).
